Bianca Andreescu gives Nike a dressing down at US Open before issuing apology
Serena Williams made some headlines last week by announcing the end of a decade-long reign atop women’s tennis, with Andreescu joining her at #1 as the world’s most-crowned female athlete. Williams had been ranked No. 1 since January. Andreescu followed suit last week, dropping by 30 spots in the world rankings, to No. 22.
Williams admitted to being surprised by Andreescu’s ranking, telling reporters on the first day of the Open in New York that “I don’t know how long I have to sit there thinking, did that really happen?” She said she had never heard of Andreescu before signing with Nike.
At the same news conference Andreescu, who won her first major title less than two weeks ago in New York, delivered a terse apology to Williams.
“I apologize,” Andreescu told reporters. “That was not me.”
