South Korea to build and operate new high-speed rail

Goodbye Planes, Trains and Automobiles. Hello, Luxury Bus?

So what’s a country like South Korea to do after losing their “first” airline from the capital to Japan? Find a way to keep their national airline going, of course. In the meantime, they’re going to look for a replacement. As the New York Times reports, South Korea’s new high-speed rail (HSR) is to be built and operated by Korean Air. It’s scheduled to open in 2021. The South Korean government approved the deal with the Korean Air CEO group and its South Korean partners last week, in a move to secure public financing. It’s an impressive move, though will come as little surprise to anyone who’s read David Cay Johnston’s report on the current state of Korean Air.

South Korea’s national carrier, however, is not the first casualty of the country’s struggle to keep its national airline running. As the story goes, the first country to use an airplane to bring passengers to their airports was Mexico; in the 1960s. So what’s a country like South Korea to do in 2012? For starters, they need to find a replacement to their national airline to fly their own citizens to their own airports, and bring in tourists, too.
