Wu Yibing becomes first Chinese man to reach the US Open third round since 1881
The 2018 US Open first round draw is now live, and four Americans will have a chance to reach the second week of the tournament, as the opening round of the 2018 US Open third round gets underway today.
Here are the four Americans to reach the third round of the US Open since 1881.
Wu Yibing – USA (2018)
Wu Yibing, born in Beijing, moved to the United States at age two. At 13 he was the youngest player to qualify for the US Open since 1933. He is the first Chinese to reach the US Open third round since 1921.
At the time of his win in the 2010 US Open he was the youngest player to reach the Round of 16 since 1948.
At the time of his win in the 2012 US Open he was the youngest player to reach the Round of 32 since 1931.
Wu started his US Open career ranked world number 10, where he finished his second round 6-7, 7-6, 7-6 against the top seed, Jo-Wilfred Tsonga.
However as he had already reached the third round on the previous three occasions, he entered into a five-year streak with a third round finish.
In his last three matches he has defeated Marcelo Rios in a quarter-final, a player who was twice at the US Open the last time he played in a third round match in 2002 and 2004, and was a quarter-finalist in 1999. He made a quarter-final in Monte Carlo in 2012 and a semi-final in 2011.
In 2010 he won the China Open. In 2012 he won the Shanghai Rolex Masters. In 2018 he won the Miami Masters.
In all he has four wins in the US Open second round, three against players ranked world number one in the world.
He will be making his debut on the main tour in the US Open third round.
In 2018 he defeated the No. 3 seed Tommy Robredo, who was a quarter-finalist in 2015.
He defeated Marinko Matosevic in a match last year which lasted for
